There are times when patients in the Miami, Florida area have imperfections that are affecting the overall appearance of their smiles. When this happens, patients may want to learn about s porcelain veneers and Lumineers. These facings are common in cosmetic dentistry and can help with disguising specific problems within the smile.
What is the difference between porcelain veneers and Lumineers?
Both restorations are used to cover issues with the anterior teeth, also known as the front teeth. These are the teeth that are noticeable when patients smile, laugh, and speak to others. When imperfections exist, patients can be extremely self-conscious about their smiles. At Miami Modern Dental, we help patients in the area determine if restorations such as these would be helpful. While both porcelain veneers and Lumineers are thin facings bonded to the front of the teeth to cover issues, Lumineers are reversible. They do not require the dentist to remove a portion of the natural tooth enamel before bonding them in place over the natural tooth. This is because they are much thinner and do not add bulk to the smile. Porcelain veneers require Drs. Marlon Pasquier, Sr. or Marlon Pasquier, Jr. to remove a portion of the tooth enamel from the front before taking impressions of the teeth for the fabrication of the restorations. This means that they must be used permanently, as irreversible changes have been made to the natural tooth structure.
Which one is better for me?
Our professionals work with patients to help them in deciding if they should have traditional porcelain veneers or move forward with Lumineers. Patients who want the option to remove them later should think about Lumineers, but must also understand that these are typically more expensive than the alternative. Both varieties of veneers are long-lasting, natural-looking, and durable, but the primary difference between the two is regarding removal of natural tooth enamel.
How are porcelain veneers and Lumineers made?
For traditional porcelain veneers, preparations are made, which include filing down the front of the natural tooth structure. This is done to eliminate adding bulk when placing veneers. This is the main difference between porcelain veneers and Lumineers. Once preparations are made (or in the case of Lumineers, once patients decide to have these restorations placed), then impressions are made of the natural teeth. This impression is sent to a dental laboratory where the new restorations are created. The dentist will send the impressions along with specific instructions in terms of the color of the new veneers, the shape, and the overall size. This ensures the new restorations match the existing teeth for seamless integration into the smile. Once completed, which typically takes approximately one to two weeks, the restorations are sent to the dentist and patients come into the office for placement of their new veneers. They are bonded into place and patients can leave the practice with a beautiful smile!
What are the advantages of porcelain veneers and Lumineers?
Veneers have several advantages for patients to consider. This includes:
- Cost. Veneers are relatively affordable and can be a great option for patients seeking long-term solutions to imperfections.
- Durability. Veneers are made of high quality porcelain which is strong and durable. They can withstand natural chewing and biting forces without breaking.
- Natural-looking. Since veneers are made with specific instructions by our dental team, patients can rest easy that their restorations will match their existing teeth and look completely natural once placed.
- Long-lasting. With proper care and attention, patients can maintain their veneers for a decade or longer.
It is important for patients to know that the teeth covered with the veneers are still susceptible to decay and disease, so monitoring through regular dental visits is essential.
