Which one is right for me?
Patients who want immediate results are encouraged to speak to our team about in-office power bleaching. However, take-home whitening kits are a great option, too. We encourage patients to learn about both options so they can make an educated decision in regards to which is most appropriate for their specific needs.
In-office whitening
Our in-office whitening is a specialized system that is used to achieve same-day results. In-office power bleaching is achieved within a single appointment, typically within two hours. The process starts with a thorough cleaning of the teeth. This removes plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth and gums which may inhibit the whitening process. Once this has been done, the dental hygienist will apply a barrier cream to the soft tissues of the gums. These tissues may be susceptible to the bleaching gel and may experience damage if not done correctly. After the barrier gel is applied, the bleaching gel is then painted onto the surfaces of the natural teeth. A special light is used to activate this bleaching gel so that the ingredients can begin lifting stains from deep within the enamel. After approximately 45 minutes to one hour, the whitening gel and barrier gel are both removed from the teeth and gums and the teeth are cleaned again by our dental hygienist. From start to finish, the process often takes less than two hours, but patients will notice their smile up to eight shades whiter from the time they walked into our office.
Take-home whitening
An alternative to our powerful in-office whitening is that of our take-home whitening process. This is a dedicated kit sent home with the patient to use as they please to gradually whiten the natural tooth enamel in a safe yet effective manner. Patients first consult with their dentist to determine if they are an appropriate candidate for professional treatment. Then, a series of impressions or “molds” are made with the patient to replicate their dental arch. These impressions create plastic trays that are made to fit their smile precisely. Once this has been done, the trays are sent home with the patient along with the whitening gel. When used correctly, this whitening gel is strong enough to brighten the smile but not too strong where it can damage the gum tissue. The take-home whitening treatment is often done on a daily basis for a predetermined amount of time to allow for gradual brightening of the smile. Many patients love the control they have with the take-home whitening process. Additionally, some patients who choose the in-office power bleaching also combine it with take-home whitening to continue brightening the smile over several weeks.
